3.1 Ancient Greek and Church Modes

In ancient Greece, modes were more than scales. Each carried an emotional role:

• Dorian suggested strength
• Phrygian mysticism
• Lydian lightness.

Thinkers saw these modes as mirrors of cosmic order.

Early Christian music adopted the same modes. The Church favored sounds that felt spiritual, like Dorian and Phrygian, using them to guide worship. These choices set the roots of Western music theory.
